Each Multiple Subject or Education Specialist Intern Program must include a minimum of 120 clock hour (or the semester or quarter unit equivalent) pre-service component which includes:

General and Foundational Pedagogy including classroom management and planning,

Reading/Language Arts,

Subject-Specific Pedagogy,

Human Development, and

Specific content regarding the teaching of English Learners

This course is part of a series of pre-service courses offered by Merced County Office of Education Intern Programs, fulfilling the required 120 clock-hours (or equivalent) of pre-service training. This course focuses on the foundational pedagogical skills necessary for effective teaching, emphasizing classroom management and planning.  Candidates will explore various strategies for creating and maintaining positive and productive learning environments, including effective planning techniques, classroom organization, and proactive behavior management approaches.  This foundational knowledge will serve as a basis for subsequent coursework addressing specific content areas and pedagogy.

This course is part of a series of pre-service courses offered by Merced County Office of Education Intern Programs, fulfilling the required 120 clock-hours (or equivalent) of pre-service training. This course focuses on developing culturally responsive and engaging literacy instruction for diverse learners in grades 4-8. EDUC 117 equips pre-service teachers to create effective lesson and unit plans integrating reading, writing, speaking, and listening, aligned with Common Core State Standards and ELA, ELD, and Preschool Frameworks. Participants explore the five cross-cutting themes of literacy—Foundational Skills, Meaning Making, Language Development, Effective Expression, and Content Knowledge—applying them in developmentally appropriate and trauma-informed ways. The course emphasizes asset-based and inclusive approaches, promoting active learning responsive to individual student needs and diverse backgrounds. Candidates learn to leverage various media and modalities, including digital tools, to enhance content knowledge and foster digital citizenship. A key component is supporting English learners' language development through integrated and designated ELD, building upon their cultural and linguistic assets. Candidates also gain proficiency in monitoring student progress, communicating results, and making referrals.

This course provides multiple subject intern candidates with subject-specific pedagogical knowledge for teaching English Language Arts (ELA), English Language Development (ELD), and Social Science in grades 4-8. Candidates will study the development of language and literacy in older children and adolescents and explore effective, standards-aligned instructional strategies for reading, writing, listening, and speaking across these content areas. Emphasis is placed on integrating literacy and content instruction, supporting English Learners through comprehensive ELD (integrated and designated), leveraging student assets, and understanding reading difficulties, including dyslexia, within a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). Instruction is grounded in the CA ELA Standards, CA ELD Standards, CA Social Science Framework, and CA Dyslexia Guidelines.
