The Merced County Office of Education Teacher Induction Program (TIP) is a two-year, individualized, job embedded system of mentoring, support and professional learning that begins in the teacher's first year of teaching. All holders of State Bill 2042 preliminary credentials must clear their credentials by participating in an Induction Program. TIP is structured to assist new teachers in the demonstration and application of the knowledge and skills acquired during the teacher preparation experience.
When teachers enroll in TIP they are matched with an experienced mentor within the first 30 days of the program. These matches are made based on credentials held and grade level/or subject area. Once the school year starts Candidates and their mentor will meet with the Candidate's administrator in a Triad meeting to discuss the areas of focus on the ILP. At the Kick-off meeting (within 60 days of the start of school) an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is created which guides the work of the candidate throughout the program. Each year, candidates and mentors are required to log a minimum of 40 hours of collaboration around the ILP and other “just in time" needs that the teacher may have. Candidates select the area of focus for their ILP by focusing on the teaching placement, administrative recommendation, knowledge from preservice experiences and personal areas of strength and growth. Although site administration is involved in the creation of the ILP the induction program is solely for the professional growth and development of the Teacher Candidate and is NOT for evaluation for employment.
