Today we focused on using Mathigon Polypad as a virtual manipulative that can be used with the Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) framework.
Perhaps counterintuitively, virtual manipulatives are considered CONCRETE tools.
We focused mostly on using Polypad to teach expressions and equations. Here is a quick video that captures this idea...

Today we focused a lot on understanding how to represent PERCENTAGES with pictures and tables. You all really liked the tables, so NEXT time we meet perhaps we can focus deeper on the pictures and tape diagrams.

How do we explain how to convert 
into a percent? Give students a tape diagram and ask them to use problem solving. They will see that "5 out of 8" is 62.5%.

At a veterinarian hospital, there are 2 cats for every 5 dogs. There are 27 more dogs than cats at the vet. How many animals are there altogether? (There are only cats and dogs at this vet.)
